3 Reasons Not to Install Your Own Ceiling Fan

Fred and his wife went shopping for ceiling fans at the local home improvement center. They picked out a beautiful fan and lighting fixtures for their bedroom. However, Fred made one big mistake: instead of hiring local electricians, he installed the fan himself. Even though this story is fictional, these 3 bad things that happened to Fred could happen to any inexperienced Sarasota, FL homeowner.

1. Electrical Shock

Fred removed the bedroom ceiling light fixture to make room for the fan. However, instead of turning off the circuit breaker, he flipped the wall switch to “off” (something experienced electrical contractors know not to do).

He did not realize the previous homeowner wired up the light switch backwards. Standing on his aluminum ladder, Fred got a pretty good shock while removing the wires from the old fixture.

2. Ladder Falls

Fred saw professional electrical lighting services perform lighting installation, and it looked easy. However, when he tried to install the light kit on the fan, he lost his balance and fell from the ladder twisting his ankle. The next day, he was so sore, he could barely walk for some time.

3. Beware of Falling Ceiling Fans

Fred was not experienced with electrical installation services and did not know the difference between cut-in electrical ceiling boxes and ones mounted to ceiling joists or support systems. Two weeks after the installation, the fan fell onto the middle of the bed. Thankfully, no one was in the bed at the time.
